What is Folk Dancing?

Folk Dancing has been defined as dancing which belongs to a particular country or group of people. Medieval art has depicted both courtly and village dancing. Originating with "common folk," the dances are passed down through the generations but retain the traditional steps and costuming of earlier times. Each dance is reflective of the culture and music of its country and era of origin. Folk dances can be slow and meditative or lively, high-spirited, and energetic. The basic steps, movements and rhythms of the various dances form the foundation for all contemporary dance expression.

Monmouth Folk Dancers has been sharing this legacy in the Red Bank area for 50 years. While we occasionally enjoy the American folk dance style - represented by both the older square dances and more current western dances - our main focus is on dances of international origin.
